Things to Do in Appleton When You're Bored
Appleton is what happens when a mid-sized Wisconsin river town decides to put everything on one street. College Avenue carries the whole cultural load: a 130-vendor farm market on summer Saturday mornings, 700+ live sets during Mile of Music, and 200,000 people for Octoberfest — all on the same walkable mile. The Fox River runs underneath it all. Literally — the city grew up around its locks and paper mills, and the banks are now trails, kayak launches, and a 575-foot railroad trestle turned walking bridge. Twenty minutes east, the Niagara Escarpment — the same limestone arc that ends at Niagara Falls — rises over Lake Winnebago at High Cliff State Park.
Appleton is the hub of the Fox Cities — about 75,000 people on the Fox River, an hour southwest of Green Bay. It was a paper town first: the river's drop powered the mills, and the locks that moved the paper are still in the water. Lawrence University anchors the east end of College Avenue and has since before Wisconsin was a state. Today the identity is simpler: a college-and-festival river town that concentrates everything it does onto one street, and does more with that street than most cities do with twenty.

The Perfect Day in Appleton
8:30 AM Downtown Farm Market: 130+ vendors stretched down College Avenue, Saturdays June through October. Do the full lap before you buy anything — coffee first, cheese curds on the way back. It's over by 12:30, which is why it goes first.
1:00 PM High Cliff State Park: Twenty minutes east. Climb the escarpment stairway, walk the effigy mound trail, and look back across Lake Winnebago from the top of the limestone. The afternoon sun is on your side of the cliff.
6:00 PM Back on the Avenue: Dinner downtown, then whatever the mile is doing that night — a touring show at the Fox Cities PAC, live music, or just the Trestle Trail overlooks while the sun drops behind the river.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Appleton worth visiting?
Yes — especially on a festival weekend, when the free Mile of Music or Octoberfest turns downtown into the best block party in Wisconsin. Outside festival season, the draw is the combination: escarpment trails at High Cliff, a real downtown, and the Fox River through the middle.
What is Appleton known for?
Paper, Houdini, and festivals. The Fox River mills made it a paper capital; Houdini claimed it as his hometown; and Mile of Music and Octoberfest now define its calendar.
What can you do in Appleton for free?
Mile of Music is entirely free — 700+ live sets across four days. So are the Saturday farm market, the Trestle Trail, disc golf at Plamann Park, and the Jones Park rink when winter cooperates.
Is Appleton good for kids?
The AKA Houdini exhibit is hands-on, Plamann Park has a sledding hill and a swimming lake, and Bubolz's trails are flat enough for short legs. Winter adds the Jones Park family skate.
What's near Appleton?
