Things to Do in Oshkosh When You're Bored
For one week every July, Oshkosh has the busiest air traffic control tower on the planet. EAA AirVenture brings roughly 700,000 people and 10,000 aircraft to Wittman Regional Airport — the world's largest fly-in, and the thing most people outside Wisconsin know the city for. The other fifty-one weeks, Oshkosh is a mid-sized city of about 67,000 on the western shore of Lake Winnebago, the largest inland lake in the state. That lake sets the rhythm: sailboats and sturgeon-spearing shanties in season, a riverwalk where the Fox River empties into it, and Menominee Park along the water. Add a public university, a walkable Main Street that's spent the last decade filling back in with breweries and a public market, and a downtown museum in a lumber baron's mansion, and you get a lake city that quietly does a lot when the airshow crowd goes home.
Oshkosh sits where the Fox River meets Lake Winnebago, about twenty minutes south of Appleton and an hour north of Fond du Lac. It made its money on lumber in the 1800s — enough sawmills to be called the Sawdust City — and later on the OshKosh B'gosh overalls that carried the name nationwide. Today the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh anchors the near-west side, and the lake anchors everything else: Winnebago is shallow, huge, and famous for a winter sturgeon-spearing season found almost nowhere else. The city's real identity, though, is aviation. EAA AirVenture is less an event the city hosts than a season the city organizes around, and the EAA Aviation Museum keeps the story going year-round.
